On July 4, 1994, Sanjay Dutt was remanded to judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the Mumbai Bomb blasts. A meeting was convened by the Cine Artistes' Association at chief Asha Parekh's house the next day. The shock of his arrest had sent ripples across the movie industry.

By July 6, 1994, the entire Bollywood industry had banded together to show their support for Sanjay Dutt. Shootings of the ongoing movies were canceled and all of the artistes and technicians gathered at a hotel.

From there the group moved towards the Thane Jail, where Sanjay was being held, to hand over a letter to the jailor.

Thousands of copies of a poster claiming "Sanju, we're with u" were printed and handed out at the gathering.
