L’Oublié ! (The Forgotten), 1872 by Émile Betsellère is a powerful and haunting oil painting that captures the tragic solitude of a wounded French infantryman left behind on a snow-covered battlefield—likely during the Franco-Prussian War. The young soldier, clad in the characteristic red and blue uniform of the period, lies prone in the cold, his body weakened, eyes turned upward in a silent plea for survival. Betsellère, a student of Alexandre Cabanel, was moved by the real story of Théodore Larran, a conscript from Bayonne who was wounded and abandoned at Saint-Privat before being rescued by a Red Cross nurse—later becoming his wife.
