A telescope is used to form large image of the object located at far distant place. In this video, we will learn about hubble space telescope. It was carried by a space shuttle into the space and placed in a orbit of the earth in April, 1990. It was a named after the american astronomer Edwin Hubble.
The reason behind taking such a large body in space is that, the exploration of space from earth using telescope had a big problem of distortion of light by earth's atmosphere. Because of which it was very difficult to get clear images of the that object. Since, the Hubble space telescope (HST) is outside the atmosphere of earth, so there is no problem of distortion. With which, it becomes possible to obtain sharp images of the distant object, using this telescope.
It consists of two mirrors, primary mirror is a large concave mirror that collects light from the distant object and converge this light to secondary mirror. The secondary mirror is a convex mirror. It further reflect the light falling on it. The reflected light pass through the hole present in the mid of primary mirror to reach the science and guidance instruments. These instruments use this light for studying the space and taking images.
There is definitely a question of maintenance if any problem occurs. Hubble space telescope is designed so as to offer flexibility in servicing. For instance, soon after the launch scientists realised that the clarity of images produced by hubble space telescope is not producing clear images of the space object. The fault was found in the primary mirror. So, the first servicing mission was carried out in 1993 with which the corrective lens is used to correct the flaw of the primary mirror as well as other parts are repaired. With which the telescope was restored to its intended quality.
Hubble's orbit is outside the atmosphere of earth and so it becomes possible to take extremely sharp images of the objects in the space. Hubble Ultra Deep Field image is the most clear image that showed farthest galaxies in the universe. It not only given the idea of how far the galaxies are, it also helped to understand the rate at which the whole universe is expanding. The rate at which galaxies are currently moving apart from one another is called the Hubble constant. With which it becomes possible to estimate the age of the universe which comes out to be about 13.772 billion years. With the help of HST, first time it becomes possible to study the collision of comet with Jupiter. It was predicted that the event happens once every few centuries. With the help of hubble space telescope, it becomes possible to find that every galaxy have a black hole at its centre. It also helped to study supernova explosion of stars.
