What if we could change the future for 500 million women and children in rural Africa who lack access to water, food, energy, and sanitation, and as a result suffer hunger, disease, and hopelessness? To address these problems, Ohio State University, the Tanzanian government, and an international consortium have developed the Sustainable Village Water Systems Program. By leveraging 21st century technologies—solar power and mobile communications—and helping people build businesses, we will boost access to basic necessities today (solar-powered wells for water and energy, sustainable higher-yield agriculture, upgraded sanitation in schools and clinics) and deliver tools to sustain them tomorrow (women entrepreneurship, supply chains, phone charging, business/technical training, water franchising).
