“It took at least two months for the federal government to become aware of the scale of South Australia’s metastasising algal bloom disaster, a Senate inquiry has heard, in a massive communication breakdown that likely delayed the Commonwealth’s funding response.

The bloom, which has killed thousands of marine wildlife and devastated the state’s lucrative seafood and coastal tourism industries, was first detected by fishermen and state authorities in March.

In April, fishermen in the St Vincent Gulf reported they were no longer catching squid and calamari.

Key victims of the crisis may be unable to access millions of dollars pledged in extra support by the Prime Minister for the region.

The money, from a total $1bn made available as an extension of the Regional Investment Corporation program (RIC), was pledged to help affected farmers and aquaculture businesses, but could leave fishermen and tourism operators in the lurch.”

On my trip down south, it was brought to my attention a number of times the devastating impact that environmental flows are having on the Murray Darling and at its mouth which has caused a disastrous algal bloom.

I spoke about the dangers of environmental flows during my time as Senator.

This was before the latest unforeseen disaster.

These disasters are manmade by faux environmentalists and meddling bureaucrats who have no idea about managing the Murray-Darling catchment.

The Snowy Hydro project, one of Australia’s great infrastructure projects was built for the purposes of irrigation for food security.

To think it has been made virtually redundant and instead used to actually destroy our farmland and marine habitats is just another example of how useless the major parties have become.
