Network Rail are replacing a 60-year-old railway bridge that takes the West Coast Main Line over the M6.

Weight restrictions on the current Clifton bridge near Penrith mean it can only carry one train at a time, causing delays to train services

Demolition & Rebuild will take place in January 2026.

To minimise disruption as much as possible, the New bridge has been built on site & will be placed into position using specialist moving techniques.

No trains will run on the West Coast Main Line between Oxenholme and Carlisle from 1 to 14 January 2026 to allow engineers to carry out the bridge replacement and other works.

The M6 will be fully closed in both directions between junctions 39 (Shap) and 40 (Penrith) for two consecutive weekends: the nights of 2–5 January and 9–12 January 2026. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and follow diversionary routes published by National Highways.

The new bridge will then allow two way running along the West Coast Mainline increasing capacity.
