In this video, I share five photographs and the five stories behind them from my career in editorial photography, commercial photography, and portrait photography. These are real-world assignments I’ve worked on for The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, and Time Magazine, along with client work here in Vietnam.
I’ll walk you through the backstories of each image, the challenges I faced, and the creative decisions I made. You’ll see how I use natural light for editorial photography, when I bring in flash for portraits, and how I’ve protected subjects’ identities in sensitive photojournalism assignments. I also share why I take creative risks with framing, slow shutter speed, and environmental portraits, and how those risks often pay off.
From documenting human rights stories in Cambodia, to photographing the world’s oldest cave art in Indonesia, to capturing atmospheric portraits for private clients, every assignment has taught me valuable lessons about storytelling, lighting, and improvisation.
If you’re a Leica shooter, Fuji user, or just someone looking to improve your photography, this episode is packed with insights that go way beyond gear talk.
