A tribute to Lester Piggott, who died on May 29th, 2022. First broadcast in 1981, this documentary was aired again on November 1, 1985, on the occasion of Piggott's first retirement, with a new introduction by Peter O'Sullevan.

From BBC Genome:

"In this, his 50th year, Lester Keith Piggott has finally decided to hang up his racing saddle for the last time. It was 37 years ago, at the tender age of 12, that racing's boy prodigy first rode into a winner's enclosure. Now his name ranks alongside those great jockeys of the turf: Fred Archer , Steve Donaghue and Sir Gordon Richards.
Piggott's successes are legendary; he has been champion jockey 11 times, and won 29 classic races, including nine victories in the Derby. There is, of course, another side to Piggott - the private face, the family man.
What does a jet-setting jockey do when the English flat-racing season ends?
Tom Conti narrates this personal account of a very personal man, written by former Sports Writer of the Year Frank Keating and introduced by the BBC's 'voice of racing' Peter O'Sullevan.

Music by JIM PARKER Film editors RAY WINGROVE , DAVE MONK Producer JEFF GODDARD
