From 1920 onwards, Bandleader/impressario Paul Whiteman set out to make the phenomenon of jazz acceptable to the publicat at large by "civilising" the new music, employing talented arrangers and an orchestra of around 20 musicians, including a string section. Pianist/arranger Keith Nichols (1945-2021) has painstakingly recreated original Whiteman arrangements and assembled Europe's finest early jazz exponents to play them at The Sage, Gateshead, the North East England's fantastic new music centre. The concert was held on 13 July 2006.
