Dental Crowns

At Kinkade Dental Studio we use only the finest materials in creating custom dental crowns for both cosmetic and restorative purposes. A dental crown is a permanent covering that fits over the original tooth. Natural-looking, tooth-colored dental crowns are used to restore teeth that are damaged or significantly decayed. Dental crowns also can be used for purely aesthetic reasons for example, to change the shape, realign existing teeth, and whiten a tooth.

Dental crowns can be made of many materials including porcelain, gold and other metals, and acrylic resin. Porcelain crowns are most common as they typically have the most realistic appearance. Whatever the situation, our dentist has the experience and knowledge to produce dental crowns with superior results and provide each patient with a healthy smile.

Preparing the Tooth and Dental Crown

During your first visit, the dentist will prepare the tooth to be crowned by removing any decay in or around it and then sculpting the tooth so the dental crown fits easily.

An impression of your teeth is then taken and sent to the dental lab where permanent, custom-made dental crowns are created (this usually takes one to two weeks). During this interim period, a temporary dental crown made of an acrylic resin is fitted onto the teeth.

On your next visit, the dentist will remove the temporary dental crown and fit the permanent dental crown onto the tooth. In this process, he will first make sure the crown has the proper look and fit and then cement the crown into place.

Maintaining Your New Dental Crown

Treat your new dental crown as you would take care of your natural teeth, with daily brushing and flossing to help keep the teeth, gums, and dental crowns free from the bacteria that can cause gum disease. Chewing on hard foods such as ice or pistachios should be avoided because over time, they can cause dental crowns to crack or break. Given proper oral hygiene, dental crowns can last several decades and may last a lifetime.

Dental fillings have been used to restore teeth for hundreds of years. Dental fillings are placed in teeth where the dentist has had to remove tooth structure due to decay or fracture. In recent years questions arose about the safety of dental amalgam, the toxicity of its mercury content, and concern about mercury emissions when it is disposed of. Technology and products have also come a long way in recent years providing uses other less obvious, metal free filling options for tooth restoration. For this reason, we help patients by using only metal free, tooth colored fillings, in avoidance of these concerns and for aesthetic results.

Fillings are used to fill in cavities and can also be used to repair cracked, broken, and worn teeth. The dentist will numb the tooth in need of a filling and remove the decayed area. He will then prepare the area by cleaning the area, making sure any bacteria or debris is removed. The tooth colored material, composite resin, is then applied in layers and "cured" with a special light that hardens the composite material. Once that is complete the dentist will shape the material by trimming off any excess material, then polish the final restoration.

Advantages of metal-free fillings

Composite, tooth-colored fillings, can be closely matched to your natural tooth color and is particularly well suited for front teeth or any others that have high visibility. Tooth-colored fillings using composite materials, also requires less removal of the natural tooth material in order to place them, which can result in smaller fillings in comparison to amalgam and will actually bond itself to the tooth structure providing extra support to the tooth.
