So apparently hitchhiking in Holland is pretty safe (well, as safe as an unsafe activity can get). It's like saying it's safe to swim in the rivers in the Northern Territory if you're near rapids because the crocodiles prefer to lurk in the quite areas.

This is my attempt to hitchhike from Son en Breugel, a village in southern Holland, to Amsterdam.
