In this tutorial, a re-entrant auxetic structure is modeled in 2D and 3D spaces using Abaqus/Standard and Abaqus/Explicit solvers. The dynamic and quasi-static loads are applied to the auxetic structure to study its response to various types of loading.
A comparison of the results shows that 2D and 3D simulations have good agreement with each other. Force-displacement curve and Poisson’s ratio are calculated from the 2D and 3D models and compared to each other. The dynamic load is modeled using a circular rigid part impacting the structure with an initial speed of 10 m/s.
It is assumed that the auxetic structure is made of ABS.
