Simon Thacker's unique nine piece East/West group The Nava Rasa Ensemble perform excerpts from each of the three movements of Indian composer Shirish Korde's Nada Ananda, concerto for guitar and chamber ensemble.
Nada-Ananda ["The Joy of Sound"] takes Hindustani classical music, Western contemporary sounds and the trailblazing innovations of John McLaughlin's seminal '70s Indo-jazz supergroup Shakti as starting points to explore Indian concepts of time, rhythm, ornamentation and melody, creating an explosive showpiece shimmering with brilliance. The first movement is in the style of a North Indian Alap. This and the second movement are based on the raga Lalit which, according to Indian music theory, is generally played at daybreak. The third movement sees extended cadenzas for the guitar, Indian violin and tabla lead to an explosive climax for the whole ensemble.
