Dell PowerEdge R520 - This video will demonstrate how to breathe fresh life into your older server. Today, we will cover the different storage options for R520 server, what storage configurations are compatible with your server, and we will also show you how to install your drives as well as test them with Dell Diagnostics & HD Sentinel.

Let's get rolling. The Dell PowerEdge R520 supports hard drives and solid state drives, SAS, SATA and Solid State Drives. SAS hard drives have speeds of 10K to 15K RPM. SATA drives operate at speeds of 7.2K RPM. SSDs can run at speeds of 3GB/s or 6GB/s. Max for SAS SSD is 6GB/s and for SATA SSD is 3GB/s. The SAS solid state drives are faster. The SATA solid state drives are more readily available and cost less money. Each one of them has its own benefits, so it will depend on your application. The R520 has two different chassis, an 4 Bay and a 8 Bay. Since both chassis options are LFF, you will need a 2.5” to 3.5” adapter to install 2.5” Solid State Drives. We offer this solution on our website. The max Solid State Drive size for your R520 is 7.68TB with SAS or SATA. We recommend Solid State Drives over Hard Drives. SSDs are not only faster (better performance), they are also more reliable. Hard Drives are less expensive, which is the main reason the technology still exists today.

We will also show you how to install a new drive into your R520. This is super easy since these drives are hot swap, meaning you can install a drive while the server is running. We will also go over how to test your drives with Dell Diagnostics and HD Sentinel. Dell Diagnostics will test more than just the drives, but we will utilize this test to make sure our drives are performing well. This is very common on 15K SAS hard drives because their bearings wear out over time. Lastly, we use HD Sentinel to test our drives. It is great for checking the Health Scores and Power On Hours for drives.
