A superb Cold War museum proposal that has been simmering as an idea for some time has surfaced at Devonport in Plymouth, Southwest England. The preserved nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) Courageous will hopefully play a starring role and is seen here back ‘on patrol.’

In the video Courageous is brought back to life via re-enactments of how the Valiant Class hunter-killer submarine would have been operated when she undertook some of the most daring missions of the Cold War, in the Soviet Union’s Arctic home seas.

Among things we see during a tour of the Courageous ‘on patrol’ are: the Commanding Officer holding a meeting with his officers; fire control operators; a periscope watchkeeper; the C.O. briefing his team by the chart table; a ratings’ bunkspace; the galley; an engine control position; sonar operators; ship control area and planesmen; submariners relaxing off watch; the C.O. on the attack periscope; the XO making a broadcast, along with one of the boat’s torpedo tubes and also still imagery of Courageous in her Cold War prime.

The boat, which has been open to the public at Devonport Dockyard since 2002, has over the years been lovingly restored to an approximation of her 1970s state, providing Britain’s only Cold War nuclear submarine time capsule.
