Mercedes-Benz has just rewritten EV history with the EQS powered by a solid-state battery breakthrough. This lightly modified prototype stunned the automotive world by driving 749 miles (1,205 km) on a single charge—and still had 85 miles of range left! That means it could have gone an incredible 834 miles total, smashing range anxiety and challenging gasoline cars once and for all.

The test run stretched from Stuttgart, Germany, to Malmö, Sweden, across highways like Germany’s A7 and Denmark’s E20, proving long-distance, high-speed performance—not just city driving efficiency. Mercedes used its Electric Intelligence navigation system, simulating real-world conditions with weather, traffic, and cabin energy usage.

At the heart of this revolution is Factorial Energy’s solid-state battery pack. With 25% higher energy capacity than a standard EQS lithium-ion pack, yet no extra weight, it’s a game-changer. Pneumatic actuators support the cells during charging and discharging, boosting durability and lifespan. Factorial is developing two technologies: FEST, a quasi-solid polymer design that fits existing factories, and Solstice, a full solid-state sulfide-based electrolyte system pushing the limits of EV innovation.

Why does this matter? Because solid-state batteries promise higher energy density, faster charging, lighter weight, improved safety, and a future where EVs aren’t just alternatives—they’re upgrades. Mercedes plans to bring solid-state-powered production EVs before 2030.
