How to connect two monitors to Macbook

Please note:- May 2021 - recent feedback is that while the M1 MacBooks natively support just one monitor, the M1 Mac Mini does natively support up to two external monitors - one via the HDMI port and a second via USB-C. But the latest models of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro support only one external display. Apple has apparently promised to fix the problem in a future update of macOS 11 Big Sur.
