Old National Anthem, Nigeria We Hail Thee, Lyrics

Journey back in time with the original national anthem of Nigeria, "Nigeria, We Hail Thee," which was in use from 1960 to 1978. This historical anthem was composed by Frances Berda, with lyrics penned by Lillian Jean Williams. It beautifully encapsulates the spirit and aspirations of a newly independent Nigeria.

"Nigeria, We Hail Thee" was Nigeria's first national anthem after gaining independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The anthem served as a unifying call for the diverse cultures within Nigeria to come together in the spirit of nation-building and unity. It was replaced in 1978 by, "Arise, O Compatriots." up until, 29 May 2024, when "Arise, O Compatriots" was officially relinquished following a bill passed by the National Assembly and subsequently signed into law by president Bola Tinubu. It was replaced by "Nigeria, We Hail Thee", Nigeria’s first national anthem

Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood we stand,
Nigerians all are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
