On July 30, 2024, several landslides struck Wayanad, Kerala, following torrential rains in the region from July 28-29, exceeding 572 mm in just 48 hours. This disaster, which began in the Vellarimala Hills and Mundakkal, devastated Choormala village, resulting in over 400 deaths and leaving more than 150 people missing.
In this video, we explore the multifaceted aspects of this tragic event. We’ll discuss the factors contributing to the landslide beyond the extreme rainfall, including human activities, land use changes, and development practices. We’ll also examine how Kerala’s unique geographic and environmental conditions make it particularly vulnerable to such disasters, and the role climate change plays in intensifying events like this. Towards the end, we aim to shed some light on the societal impact and rescue operations.
