Rhodes is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Rhodes. The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, also known as Kastello (Greek: Καστέλο), is a medieval castle in the city of Rhodes on the island of Rhodes, Greece. It is one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. The site was formerly the citadel of the Knights Hospitaller, serving as a palace, headquarters and fortress. The palace was originally built at the end of the 7th century as a Byzantine citadel. After the knights occupied Rhodes and some other Greek islands (such as Kalymnos and Kastellorizo) in 1309, they converted the fortress into their administrative center and the palace of their Grand Master. In the first quarter of the 14th century, they repaired the palace and made a number of major modifications. The palace was damaged in an earthquake in 1481 and was repaired soon after. Street of the Knights of Rhodes - located very close to the palace. It is recognized as one of the best-preserved medieval streets in the world and is one of the most popular places to walk around the Old Town. The buildings along the street house inns from the 15th and 16th centuries. Some buildings are constructed of finely hewn sandstone, while others are decorated with intricate carvings or commemorative plaques.
