Joseph LeDoux, one of the nation’s leading neuroscientists, prefers we use words like fear, anger, and love to describe our mental states, and not use those words to talk about behavioral and physiological responses.
A professor of neuroscience at New York University, his research is primarily focused on survival circuits, including their impacts on emotions such as fear and anxiety.

Fun fact: he is also the lead singer and songwriter for his band, The Amygdaloids.

LeDoux argues that anxiety is a perfectly normal part of everyday life. We all experience anxiety at some point, but we don’t all have anxiety disorders. He suggests that fear and anxiety – and maybe all emotions, in a way – have set points. That is, each emotion has a “normal” level that it always returns to.
