This is an in-depth video on ship design for both Sword of the Stars games. It's aimed at players and also people just generally interested in ship design. The ship design system in these games was quite original, so it bears paying attention to, even for people who may not be interested in playing.

Some things I planned on mentioning, but missed:
1) When discussing Prototyping, I had planned on mentioning that I recommend all factions create new designs on Turn 1 for a Drone Carrier ship, a Repair ship, and an Assault Shuttle ship, in that order of priority. Drones speed up surveying and can be upgraded using refits. Assault Shuttles are good to have if you need them, and free (on Turn 1) if you don't.
2) When making Retrofits, PD Lasers count as a PD-type weapon, not as a type of Laser. So, sadly there's no way to add PD to existing designs.
3) When choosing weapons, right-clicking will add that weapon to all turrets of the same size.
4) Prototypes force players to take more care in designing their ships.
5) I had planned on showing the PD on a Dreadnought shooting down 40 missiles at the end.
