Описание к видео The original fail of "no means no"

"Apollo and Daphne" (c. 1470–1480) is by Piero del Pollaiuolo More details in the comment section.

Hello, everyone. "Apollo and Daphne" (c. 1470–1480) is by Piero del Pollaiuolo, an Italian Renaissance painter from Florence. His older brother was the artist Antonio del Pollaiuolo and the two frequently worked together. This painting is often attributed to both brothers.

So, do you know the story of Daphne and Apollo? It's from "Metamorphoses," a Latin narrative poem from 8 CE by the Roman poet Ovid. Apollo (god of healing, archery, music and arts, sunlight, knowledge, etc) gets arrogant with Cupid (god of love) so Cupid shoots two arrows: "one kindles love, the other dispels it." The one that kindles is golden with a sharp glistening point, the one that dispels is blunt with lead beneath its shaft. The first arrow wounds Apollo, the second Daphne (a river nymph). Daphne is beautiful and has a lot of potential lovers but she only cares to explore the forest and go hunting. She also dedicated herself to perpetual virginity and begged her father (the river god Peneus) to not force her into marriage. So you can imagine that trouble is unavoidable when Apollo spots Daphne in the woods and falls instantly in love (thanks to Cupid's arrow). He rushes to her but Daphn flees. She runs toward the river banks and cries for her father's help (she actually asked that he destroy her beauty) -- and then bam, she is transformed into a laurel tree. BUT our boy still doesn't give up. He tries to kiss the tree but the tree shrinks away. Apollo is not discouraged and says he will honor her forever by wearing a crown made of her branches and using her wood to make his bow and lyre. Is this sweet or super creeps? Daphne ended up as a tree but in a sense, she remained true to herself. Anyway, still messed up that her sacrifice became his eternal symbol. My two cents. Oh, and there are so many paintings and sculptures based on this story. Look it up if you get a chance. Wenzel Jamnitzer's sculpture -- I highly recommend it. Thanks for stopping by.
