I Love The Phantom Menace (25 Years Later)

Every generation has a legend. Every saga has a beginning.

In May of 1999, audiences everywhere experienced the film that would forever shift the course of Star Wars. Fittingly written and shot with the working title Episode 1: The Beginning, The Phantom Menace has helped define the generational gap amongst Star Wars fans. Put simply, the old farts who lived and died by the OT thought this movie was ass. But 25 years later a new order of young adults, for whom Episode 1 holds special significance, has emerged to take their revenge. And I count myself among them. So to celebrate its 25th birthday, I want to discuss what works in The Phantom Menace, the great achievements George Lucas and company don't get enough credit for, and my admiration for its many iconic moments. Immense worldbuilding. Great Jedi characters (shout-out to my boy Qui-Gon). An absolute peak lightsaber battle. It's time to put some respect on the first chapter in Lucas's saga.
