Walt Disney saw himself in that character 🪁 🥹 and that’s why we all love Disney movies, too. We see ourselves in the story, in the trials and the triumphs, and we hold onto the hope that our characters can have a happy ending as well 💜

Bill Walsh was said by the Sherman Brothers to be “one of the most gifted men ever to have worked for Disney - deft with language and humor.” While most of his work leaned toward the silly and ridiculous (which he loved), the way he saw Walt Disney and incorporated his characteristics into the lead characters to get his scripts approved was both cunning and brilliant. Bill said in a 1973 interview with Bob Thomas that his trick was to “always amuse [Walt]” and no doubt Mary Poppins script did that in spades. But it also struck an emotional chord with Walt, especially seeing his own life reflected back to him… a busy working father, who was always in the spotlight and possibly wrestled with the idea of work/life balance like so many of us do as parents. He made time on the weekends for his girls to take them places, and I think that’s what made the idea of Mr. Banks’s character arc appealed to Walt on a personal level. 🥰
