In this video I show you how to use your swatch to calculate how much yarn you need for any project.

Step 1: Measure your swatch then multiple the length by the width

Length x Width = total inches

Step 2: Weigh your swatch (record weight in grams)

Step 3: Calculate the total finished Inches of your project (for garments calculate the finished inches for each section of the piece. The back panel, front panels and sleeves then add your totals together)

Length x Width = total inches

Step 4: Divide the total inches of your project by the total inches of your swatch.

Total inches for finished project / total inches of your swatch = number of times your swatch fits into your finished project

Step 5: calculate how many grams of yarn is needed for your project

Number of times swatch fits into project x your swatch weight = total grams of yarn needed for project

Step 6: Calculate the yards per gram of your yarn

Number of yards in skein / weight of skein = yards per gram of yarn

Step 7: Calculate the number of yards needed to complete project

Total grams of yarn needed for project x yards per gram of your yarn = total yards needed for project

Step 8: Calculate the number of skeins needed

Total yards needed for project / total yards per skein = number of skeins needed for project
