The myth of the origin of the Nadars tells that the Nadars took seven children born to Devakannis and Chatriya Maharishi, took birth from them and raised them. The community is based on this and calls Nadars Patirakali's maids | Many people have tried to find out about the origin of Nadars but no clear conclusions have been reached. Caldwell, who studied the Nadars in the 19th century, suggested that the Nadars were immigrants from northern Sri Lanka. But many people do not support this view. Many scholars of the Nadar community in particular have proposed that the Nadars were formerly of high status and that their origin was associated with the royal clan[citation needed]. They also claimed that the Pandyas who ruled Madurai were a sub-section of them. They were also of the opinion that the references found in the Mahavamsa and the many names of those who served in the Chera government confirm that the Nadars were warriors.
They felt that the Nadars, who suffered much due to the invasion of the Nayaks, had to leave their native lands of Sivakasi, Kamudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai and move to arid areas like Tiruchendur, where they had to make a living by extracting padanir from palm trees.
