The Real Reason Your Nose Black Dots Won’t Go Away! | Trichostasis Spinulosa Explained | Clear Skin
What Are These Black Dots on Your Nose?
If you’ve seen tiny black dots on your nose that never go away—no matter how many times you scrub or use nose strips—you’re not alone. Many people mistake them for blackheads. But in some cases, it could be a condition called Trichostasis Spinulosa.
How Is It Different From Blackheads?
Blackheads form when sebum and dead skin clog a pore and oxidize when exposed to air. That’s what gives them the dark color.
In contrast, Trichostasis Spinulosa is a bundle of tiny fine hairs (vellus hair) trapped inside a single pore, often surrounded by keratin. From the surface, it mimics a blackhead but is actually a cluster of 10–30 thin hairs tightly
packed in one pore.
Why Nose Strips Don’t Work
Nose strips can pull out some surface oil or sebum—but not the deeply embedded hairs. Repeated use may even irritate the skin and damage the barrier. That’s why regular scrubs or strips won’t fix this condition.
How Do We Diagnose It?
At the clinic, we use a dermoscope, a magnifying tool that helps us spot multiple vellus hairs inside a pore. This confirms Trichostasis Spinulosa and rules out classic blackheads.
What Causes It?
Genetics
Aging-related keratin buildup
Hormonal changes like PCOS, thyroid imbalance, or fluctuations in estrogen/progesterone
Testosterone and DHT also impact how hair cycles behave across different skin areas
What’s the Right Treatment?
Topical Retinoids like tretinoin or adapalene to reduce keratin build-up and lightly exfoliate
Face washes containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid for deeper cleansing But these only go so far.
What Works Best: Laser Hair Reduction
Laser hair reduction is the most effective treatment. For Indian skin, ND:YAG and Diode Lasers are the safest choices. They minimize pigmentation risks and target the deeper vellus hair inside the pores.
Within 3–4 sessions, you’ll notice visible improvement in texture and dot visibility.
Long-Term Maintenance
For lasting results, maintain a proper skincare routine with sunscreen, gentle exfoliants, and professional supervision.
