On theory this is the smartwatch everyone should want – “always-on” transflective display, 7-dayt battery life, more than 50 different kinds of sport, waterproof. But – the lack of enough updates between the Amazfit’s Stratos 2 and Stratos 3 makes me wonder… is this the end of an era?
Amazfit continue to offer us stylish packaging and that part seems to be even exceeding the expectations. However, I just can’t believe that for two years Amazfit didn’t come up with a better design. They seem to keep the carbon fiber texture on the side. The charger is different and I can’t say the quality of the new one is better. Hopefully at least the issues with the melted connectors are now fixed – as there have been some units affected from the previous generation. Let’s talk about the specs: dual-core 1.2Ghz CPU, 512MB ram, 4GB storage, the mentioned 1.34 inch transflective touch screen, 300 mah battery, PPG tracker, temperature sensor, air pressure sensor, Bluetooth 4.2 and Bluetooth 5, and WiFi.
Basically the hardware inside Stratos 3 is what we get from the Pace model – but on steroids. We have no NFC, no microhphone, no speaker, and now – let me point your attention towards something which is quite disappointing to notice – Xiaomi have limited the functionality of the Stratos 3 unless you use a Mi Phone. Similar to how Samsung have locked some features of the Galaxy Active watch and made them exclusive to Smasung phones only. While the Amazfit Stratos works fine for unlocking the phone, the Stratos 3 can only unlock my phone via Bluetooth only if I have a Mi or Redmi or Poco device.
In terms of improvements – the accelerometer is now much more precise, so theoretically steps tracking and sports tracking should be at a better level, therefore the watch supports way more activities – and right now is perhaps the total champion about variety of sports supported. Amazfit have apparently targeted this edition towards athletes – you can enable GPS continuous working mode for up to 70 hours in cross-country running, outdoor hiking and mountaineering mode. The optical heart rate sensor is also a big step up, being way more accurate and of course – battery friendly, even with 24/7 tracking.
For navigating through the menus we now have these middle buttons – they seem to be a good idea, and in fact will help a lot to people that do sports. Because when you are running – you cannot have the precision to use the touchscreen. During most exercises you will notice quite a detailed map created, and I can confirm that the precision is really good! And you have a choice between GPS, GLONASS, Baidu and Galileo.
Let’s put it like that – if you like sports – the Stratos 3 could be a good idea – because right now it’s the champion about variety. If you want smartwatch features – it will rather disappoint you. I can barely call this an upgrade, it is more like a “plus edition” of the previous model, and the lack of speaker, microphone, NFC chip and that dual-core archaic processor are only small part of these drawbacks. If you look to upgrade your older Amazfit – that wouldn’t feel like a new one, unless you need more sport types.
