I was a Billy Joel fan from the age of 12, and honestly, a little skeptical about Elton John (I think I was being protective of my first "Piano Man" at the time, and not wanting to "cheat" on him with another piano player LOL).

But when I was 14, I saw a concert video for rent at the local video store called "Elton John: The Black & White Concert", which was about half of the footage from his 1984 show at Wembley Stadium on the BREAKING HEARTS Tour. It was after his voice had deepened somewhat from growing older, but before the throat tumor that robbed him of his brilliant falsetto. For me, it was my favorite Elton voice.

I checked out the VHS tape (man, that dates me a bit LOL), and thought, "I might as well give this guy a chance." I was blown away by the whole video, and loved every single song. But the song (and performance) that absolutely hooked me for life as an Elton John fan, was "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." I don't know what it is about this tune that is so special to me, but it just grabbed me by the shirt collar and never let me go.

A couple years later I had the privilege of seeing Elton and Billy Joel together on their first "Face to Face" tour in 1994, and Elton hadn't performed this song since 1985 due to the loss of his falsetto abilities after his throat surgery. One of the absolute highlights of the night for me was that Billy Joel (who apparently also considers this one of his favorite EJ songs) performed it during his set....and KILLED IT!

A few short years later, probably due to the response Billy got for the song on their joint tour, Elton started doing it again and found a way to adapt it to his new vocal range with a little help from the band....and it is still fantastic. But I'll never forget the magic of hearing his performance from 1984 the first time.....it still gives me chills just to think about it.

Enjoy....this is one of my all time favorite songs by one of my all time favorite artists!
