While filming the scenes outside the Black Gate for the Return of the King, the crew needed a desolate location in New Zealand without vegetation. They found a desert that met these criteria, but it was also used by the New Zealand Army for live bomb and artillery tests. On the first day of shooting, an Army officer briefed them on the presence of bombs and rockets in the area, instructing them not to touch anything they found. Despite being surrounded by buried mines and unexploded ordnance, the crew filmed a battle sequence, often encountering bomb fragments and having to clear the area throughout the day.
