Alligator Gorge - STUNNING
A gorge located within the Mount Remarkable National Park in the southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia.

The gorge features narrow passageways with towering red quartzite cliffs, creating dramatic landscapes. Over time, the gorge was carved by water, resulting in unique geological formations.

We hiked the Alligator Gorge through a section called The Narrows. We also ventured to the two lookouts, which are a short walk from the carpark. WOW It is a very pretty gorge and makes for a great walk.

This area was known as Ali's Creek for many years. The origin of today's name, Alligator Gorge is uncertain, but perhaps it grew out of the name 'Ali’. Or perhaps it reminded them of alligators when the European settlers saw the Lace Monitors that live in the ranges.

Ali was an aboriginal living in the area. Ali worked as a shepherd for EJ Hector who leased the land from the Government. Ali looked after up to 2000 sheep in the area during the 1880s, often leading them to water in the gorge.

‘Hector must have called it Ali's creek because he was the first man to take it up and fence it… We called him Ali and he could talk very good English, a big fella.’ WH Slee, local stockman.
