Canton of Valais / Wallis
It is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of thirteen districts and its capital and largest city is Sion. The flag of the canton is made of thirteen stars representing the districts, on a white-red background. Valais is situated in the southwestern part of the country. It borders the cantons of Vaud and Bern to the north, the cantons of Uri and Ticino to the east, as well as Italy to the south and France to the west. It is one of the three large southern Alpine cantons, along with Ticino and the Grisons. It is a bilingual canton, French and German being its two official languages. Traditionally, the canton is divided into Lower, Central and Upper Valais, the latter region constituting the German-speaking minority. Valais essentially coincides with the valley of the Rhône from its headwaters to Lake Geneva, separating the Pennine Alps from the Bernese Alps. A major wine region, the canton is simultaneously one of the driest regions of Switzerland in its central Rhône valley and among the wettest, having large amounts of snow and rain up on the highest peaks found in Switzerland, such as Monte Rosa and the Finsteraarhorn.
Saas-Grund
It is a municipality in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It lies east of Lenzspitze and Dom. It consists of the village of Saas-Grund, the hamlets of Unter dem Berg and Ze Laubinu and portions of the hamlets of Tamatten and Unter den Bodmen. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (1,068 or 91.5%) as their first language, Serbo-Croatian is the second most common (35 or 3.0%) and Albanian is the third (35 or 3.0%). There are 3 people who speak French, 11 people who speak Italian.
Saas-Almagell
It's a municipality in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The settlement, at the upper end of the Saastal, was relatively isolated for much of its history. A road suitable for motor vehicles was completed in 1948, whilst the village did not have its own school until 1958. The local economy was boosted in the 1960s by the construction of the Mattmark Dam. Saas-Almagell has an area, as of 2011, of 110.3 square kilometers (42.6 sq mi). Of this area, 7.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 4.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and 87.9% is unproductive land. The municipality is located in the Visp district and is located approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) from Saas-Fee. It is the southernmost municipality in the Saas valley. It consists of the village of Saas-Almagell, part of the hamlet of Unter den Bodmen and the hamlets of zum Moos, Alpien and Furggstalden. Saas Almagell lies in the Pennine Alps and the territory of the municipality encompasses a large number of summits. The highest are the Rimpfischhorn, Strahlhorn, Allalinhorn and Weissmies (all over 4,000 metres above sea level). Other important summits are the Portjengrat, Sonnighorn, Stellihorn, Egginer, Jazzihorn, Almagellhorn and Spechhorn. The Mattmarksee is the largest lake in the valley.
Mattmark Dam
It's a reservoir in the Saas Valley of the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. The Mattmark dam was built from 1960–1965. The lake's surface area is 1.76 km2 (0.68 sq mi). The lake lies at a height of 2,197 metres above sea level, between the massifs of the Rimpfischhorn and Stellihorn. The highest peak visible from the lake is the Strahlhorn (4,190 m).
Saas Valley
The Saastal is an alpine valley in the district of Visp, in the eastern part of the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is the valley of the river Saaser Vispa. It is separated from the Mattertal to the west by the Mischabel massif. Villages in the valley are, upstream, Eisten, Saas-Balen, Saas-Grund, Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell.
