Growing a Unique Sugarcane Collection Outdoors in the UK | Rare Varieties from Around the World

Here's an update on my growing collection of sugarcane varieties (Saccharum officinarum) thriving outdoors in containers in my UK garden. Each plant started from fresh-cut sugarcane pieces with viable eyes or buds, sourced from Caribbean and Asian stores and market stalls across the UK. With varieties from around the world, this collection might be the most extensive of its kind in a UK backyard! I've shared rooted ratoons with fellow enthusiasts across the UK, including in Manchester and Northern Ireland. My collection includes unique varieties such as Red Stem sugarcane from the USA, Black sugarcane from India, Green sugarcane from Uganda, and striped sugarcane from Jamaica. The UK’s outdoor growing season for sugarcane spans about six months.
