The opening prelude of this piece has a fast and steady line using the whole tone scale and there is a wide range of tone colours and contrasts in the opening movement. It is then transformed into a totally different texture that heads to the closing with a harp-like cadenza. The various colours and the general tone of this prelude su˛est orchestral writing.
