Carolina Dog or American Dingo. Country of origin: United States. The American Dingo, also called Carolina Dog or Dixie Dingo, descends from the «pariah» dogs , those canids that accompanied Paleo-Indians traveling from Asia to North America through the Bering Passage about 8,000 years ago. Although largely domesticated, they are still found in the wild near the Georgia/South Carolina border, but representatives of the breed have been sighted as far north as Pennsylvania and in Arizona to the west. The common point between these different spaces where wild American Dingos live is that they are rural areas.

These dogs were named Carolina Dogs by Professor Lehr Brisbin, who wrote the first scientific papers on the breed, and therefore ultimately its official recognition. In the 1970s, this University of Georgia ecologist was conducting research near the Savannah River in South Carolina when he noticed an animal he first mistook for a stray dog . After discovering several identical dogs on the same site, he embarked on a systematic study of the breed.

The American Dingo is now recognized by the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) and the United Kennel Club (UKC). In 2017, he entered the Foundation Stock Service Program, being the preliminary step to official recognition by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
