Despite what the oil and gas industry might say, a lot of oil and gas spills are never fully cleaned up.

Take this one in New Mexico by Apache Corporation. Apache first reported this spill at a wastewater injection well in July 2019, said it polluted “0.57 acres.”

Over 4 years later, there is still groundwater pollution from this spill - a 60 acre plume of contamination - quite a jump from the 1/2 acre Apache originally reported.

Last fall, the state asked Apache for more groundwater monitoring, but Apache refused to add more testing, even as water pollution was getting worse.

According to state records, neither the state or Apache have found the precise location of the leak, which seems to be underground, just like wastewater leaks right across the border in TX where injected oil and gas waste is migrating underground and shooting up out of the earth, polluting ranch land that still isn’t cleaned up either.

Will the groundwater around Apache’s site, just outside of Eunice, NM, ever be clean again?
