Speaking in tongues is a practice much mocked but neurologically it's affects as as demonstrable as meditation. Does the path to transforming our ability to see the world spiritually need us to 'speak in tongues'.

Speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is indeed often misunderstood or dismissed, but neuroscience shows it's a real altered state of consciousness. Studies have shown that during glossolalia, activity in the language centers of the brain decreases, while emotional and self-monitoring areas stay active—suggesting a surrender of linguistic control that paradoxically fosters deep inner experience, much like meditation.

whether this practice is necessary to “see the world spiritually”—touches on something deeper. No single path defines spiritual perception. What glossolalia, meditation, and even McGilchrist’s left/right brain insights share is the shift from analytic control to experiential presence. Speaking in tongues may be one way the brain allows that shift to occur—by bypassing rational filters to access the numinous.

So, do we need to speak in tongues? Not necessarily. But perhaps we do need something that breaks the dominance of the left-brain’s need for control—something that invites us into mystery, surrender, and openness. For some, it's prayerful utterance. For others, silence.
