From New Hebrides to Vanuatu

In 1980, the islands known as New Hebrides achieved independence to become the Republic of Vanuatu.
It followed decades of joint rule by the French and British condominium.
In the years leading up to independence, the ABC reported on the history of colonisation, the resistance of the ni-Vanuatu people and examined the cultural and political implications that lay ahead for the new Pacific nation.
