The first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, is only seven words in the original Hebrew: “בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ” ("In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth"). Though brief, this verse poses several translation challenges in syntax, vocabulary, and grammar.

First, Hebrew syntax can be ambiguous. The phrase “in the beginning” (בְּרֵאשִׁית) could imply an absolute beginning or simply a beginning of a particular event, leading to variations like “When God began to create…” vs. “In the beginning, God created….” The difference can influence theological interpretations.

There are even 2 words that aren't translated at all into English.
