Europe is preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazis and the end of World War II on Friday 8 May.

At 3pm on 8 May 1945, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed the nation to announce the surrender of Germany.

Celebrations erupted all around Europe and London turned into a giant party.

Many Londoners headed to Buckingham Palace to see the royal family appear on the balcony alongside the prime minister.

After years of conflict and wartime restrictions, people were keen to let loose.

The partying went on long into the night.
