By the time that 1984 was reached, plans were in place by BBC engineers to redesign the testcard, the optical version of which had been in use since its inception in 1967. Due to the fact that the BBC had to share a testcard between the channels, as BBC1 had to overlay their own caption over this card and the PM5554 where BBC2 would be present, attempts were made to digitise the card so that a brighter, more aesthetic picture could be seen, the F is now in Rockwell font, the cross is more in the centre of the screen, the top castellations had the colour-bars in full and also there is now room for the channels to place their network identity using a caption generator, which had been in place a few months later; however, the BBC2 caption didn't appear until autumn 1984, and lasted until 1991 because the TWO caption couldn't be read clearly enough by engineers or viewers when introduced in 1986. However, this new tape, composed by Surrey-based Nicky North, first appeared as the replacement for Tulsa in May 1984 and would soon be replaced by Country Express in August 1985.
