The Quarter Turn | Deep Dive

A little while back the Divers Alert Network wrote an article about the quarter-turn rule while diving, which sparked up a bit of controversy so I thought I’d take a look and dive a little deeper. If you learnt to dive a few years back, or even recently, you may have been taught to open your cylinder valve all the way open, and a quarter turns back.

To be fair, I used to teach this, it was just the done thing really. My Instructor taught me to do it and I still back off my cylinder valve when I pressurize my regs, I’ve never had a problem with that method and neither have millions of other divers around the world. There are however some reported, and obviously other unreported, cases where the quarter turn method have caused incidents and even a fatality, so a lot of divers are changing their procedures.
