In 1914, Inghinidhe na hÉireann became Cumann na mBan, which was regarded as the women's arm of the Irish Volunteers although some members of the trade unions joined the Irish Citizen Army instead.


The Constitution of Cumman na mBan stated that their aims were:


To Advance the cause of Irish liberty
To organise Irish women in the furtherance of that objective
To assist in arming and equipping a body of Irish men for the defense of Ireland
To form a fund for these purposes to be called the ‘Defense of Ireland Fund’.
Other activities they were to engage in training for included first aid, drill and signalling and rifle practice.
