In this episode of Wild with Cyril we go fishing for Newts in a swimming pool that has been abandoned for 30 years. Allowing nature to reclaim and thrive in its waters.

Stuck at home during the UK lockdown, we head to the defunct swimming pool in our garden to catch newts we have heard live there. We initially set out with bread, in an attempt to bait the newts in to the path of our net. However, though we spot newts near by our net, they show no interest at all in our bait.


After trying baiting another spot with still no success, I switch tactics to direct stalking. And am able to sneak up on a sunbathing newt and scoop it up before it swims away. After inspecting the newt in a humane fashion we return it to the swimming pool unharmed. All the bread used as bait was removed as well, though none of it was touched by a newt anyway.


Note: These newts are common/palmate newts. Not the more protected greater crested newts.
