In 1861, Britain had scarcely recovered from the taxing Crimean War, still eyeing the Russians with great caution. British colonies were ever draining the empire’s energy, and the thought of joining another foreign fight was deeply unappealing. This, however, failed to shield the British Empire from the existence of war in their old colonies, and the expectant gaze from across the pond pierced through Britain’s turned back. They would have to say do, or say, something.
