Hello everyone and welcome back to this week’s episode of Red Elevator. Today we will be looking at Transitional Design which is essentially a marriage of traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials, and fabrics equating to a classic timeless design. There is a lot of freedom to be found in transitional design and the ability to experiment with different decor styles. The first example we will look at is a gallery wall juxtaposed with a sisal rug and an uber-modern marble coffee table. The informality of a sisal rug, mixed with very traditional oil on canvas gilded framed art is a definite winner. The next way to achieve transitional design is to bring in texture and color to your room in a way that mixes traditional and modern pieces like a beautiful sheet of music. If you have inherited a lot of pieces of traditional furniture from your family, do not get rid of these pieces, instead, use them in a way that will elevate the style of your room. Painting your walls in one bright color and bringing in traditional furniture will definitely modernize the room and once again make your design quite a bit more transitional. Bringing in modern large-scale art is also a way that transitional design can be espoused. Lastly, we will look at what I call “opposite architecture” which is a really easy way of achieving transitional design. All you have to do is bring in pieces that directly contradict the home's architecture.
