Almost every country in the world uses the metric system—it's based on logic, easy conversions, and powers of 10. You just move the decimal. Simple. But a few countries, like the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar, still use the old imperial system with confusing conversions like 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, and 1,760 yards in a mile.

This isn’t just about measurements on a scale—it affects science, medicine, trade, GPS, aviation, and even timekeeping. Without proper standards, your phone’s GPS could go wrong, your medicine dosage could be off, and your flights could miscalculate. That’s why most of the world—and all scientific communities—has shifted to metric.

So why hasn’t everyone switched? Especially the US?

In the 1970s, America did plan to go metric. There was even a special board set up to make the transition. But people didn’t feel the need to change. Everything from road signs and cookbooks to machines and tools would have to be redesigned—a very expensive job. Plus, people felt more comfortable with what they already knew. Saying “5 foot 10” just sounds more familiar than “178 centimetres”.

Still, the metric system continues to grow in use. Even in the US, industries like medicine, science, and the military already use it. It’s just everyday use that hasn’t fully caught up yet.

From ancient Egyptians using ropes to measure land to the French deciding enough was enough and bringing in the metric system in 1799—humans have always wanted clear, trusted ways to measure things. And whether it's a litre of milk or a kilometre-long road, the metric system helps everyone stay on the same page—no matter which country you're in.
