Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand's West Coast is one of many Glaciers on New Zealand's South Island. Like all the Glaciers in the world, Franz Josef has retreated significantly up the mountains. The only way to reach the Glacier now is by helicopter. There are hikes at low level that once brought you up close to the Glacier but these days it's a long way away. The Alex Knob track takes you up high through beautiful forests onto Alpine ridges where the views to the Glacier and the Tasman sea are just sublime.
