The episode "He Smelled the Ham, He Got Excited" begins with Alan feeling bored and unappreciated while living with Charlie. Alan then decides to fake being sick so that Charlie will take care of him and wait on him hand and foot. Charlie falls for Alan's scheme and starts pampering him with breakfast in bed, fluffing his pillows, and even giving him a sponge bath.

Meanwhile, Jake discovers his talent for cooking and decides to enter a cooking competition. He asks Charlie to be his sous-chef, but Charlie is too preoccupied with taking care of Alan to help him out.
